With our Before & After School Clubs located on site at both Escrick C of E School and Cliffe VC School, links with School are a particular area of strength for Young Discoverers. All of our settings follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum for children up to and including Reception year. It is therefore crucial that the observations we make in Nursery, and the progress we make with children in achieving key goals and milestones is effectively communicated to home and to school, for children to make natural, positive transitions between settings. As part of this process we invite all school reception teachers for whichever school your child transitions to from Nursery, to come and visit our setting and see the children in their current learning environment. This ensures that first meetings are relaxed and comfortable for the child, and that both teacher and key person can focus on what is so very special about this little person. Following this, we always get involved with the transition visits that children are usually invited to by their new school. We make at least one visit to your child’s school, and where possible make this an exciting trip out in our minibus with your child. In this regard, we have visited reception classes at Escrick, Naburn, Riccall, North Duffield, Bubwith, Barlby, Cawood, Pocklington, and a number in Selby and York.
Once children have transitioned to school, for children at Escrick and Cliffe, the home/school links don’t stop there. Children attending the Before & After School Clubs have learning journeys that are monitored and recorded by the Manager of the setting, and shared with the Reception teacher in both settings. As in Nursery, we are able to record events and achievements electronically through video or photo, and share this with parents too through the secure Parentzone system. Parents are invited at every stage to record the special little things their children do at home, which add to a much more rounded view of their achievements, likes and interests, and plans for next steps in learning. Before & After School Club extend interests and learning from the school environment, but make sure it doesn’t feel like a longer school day. Our team are very skilled at converting learnings into fun activities and games that reinforce learning, and ensure that children can reach new things that wouldn’t otherwise, but also allow the relaxation and socialisation time that is so valuable to them.
The professional sharing of information between home, school and childcare setting is paramount to ensuring children achieve their best potential, whilst still ensuring we maintain and respect confidentiality. Full details on how this is achieved is documented in our policies and procedures available at the settings for all interested parties to view.
